What can I earn?

Photovoltaics is an effective way to capture the energy from the sun and make a reliable return on your investment. Let us show you how.

Income and savings come from a PV system come in three ways:

1. The Feed in Tariff

This is a payment made on every unit of electricity you produce (even if you use it yourself!). For domestic systems (less than 4kW)  the rate is 21p/kWh (from December 12th 2011). Click here to find out further details on the Feed in Tariff

2. Energy Saving

Producing and using your own electricity reduces your electricity bill by reducing imported electricity

3. Export

When you are producing more energy that the house is using you can sell electricity back to your energy supplier. Export payments are paid in addition to the Feed in Tariff.

A further financial benefit for domestic owners of PV systems is that the income you generate is TAX FREE

Estimated Annual Income and Savings

The table belows provides an estimate of the income and savings that can be made from domestic scale PV systems.  Estimates are provided using SAP (nationalised output estimate) and PVGIS (localised output for mid Cornwall).

Assumptions made in above table:

  • Output figures according to SAP2005 or PVGIS (http://re.jrc.ec.europa.eu/pvgis/)
  • Based on south facing, 30 degree pitched roof with no shading
  • FIT rates as per DECC consultation (tbc)
  • Ignores tax on income
  • 50% export, 50% on-site consumption
  • Export rate of 3.1p/kWh
  • Import rate of 15p/kWh

The performance of solar PV systems is impossible to predict with certainty due to the variability in the amount of solar radiation (sunlight) from location to location and from year to year.  This estimate is based upon the Government’s standard assessment procedure for energy rating of buildings (SAP) and is given as guidance only.  It should not be considered as a guarantee of performance.
