Solar heating - FAQs
to ask a question about solar heating call 01209 716861

Can solar panels contribute to my central heating?
In some new dwellings with underfloor heating, solar panels can provide a contribution towards the heating demand as well as hot water. For this to be possible a thermal store needs to be installed and should be designed into the building at an early stage. We would not generally advise connecting solar panels to a radiator system.

I have an East/West facing roof ‚ will solar still work?
The output of a collector system on and East/West roof will only reduce by approximately 30% when compared with a south facing elevation. There are two potential options. Firstly, Increase the collector area on one roof elevation. Secondly, install an E/W split system. In this instance collectors will be installed on both East and West

elevations. In the morning heat will be drawn from the East facing collectors and in the afternoon from the West facing roof.

Do your solar pumps consume electricity?
The systems we install in the majority of occasions use mains powered pumps. The energy consumption of this pump is small and the controls will only allow this pump to run when the collectors can make a useful contribution. We can offer an alternative DC pump which is powered by a small PV panel. This will consume no electricity. With this option, basic system controls are provided with fewer monitoring options.
