What makes a good site for a wind turbine?

Whether or not a wind turbine is viable depends on how good your site is. Initially, the two most important factors in a good site are wind and land.

Wind- because quite simply it’s all about wind! The more wind there is the more electricity your turbine will produce. The amount of energy produced by a turbine is proportional to the cube of the wind speed, i.e. doubling the wind speed means the eight times the power output; so even a small difference in wind speed will make a big difference in energy production.

Land- Land is important for two reasons. Firstly wind turbines work best where there is a clean air flow. Ideally your site will have an open aspect to the prevailing wind, and be as free as possible from obstructions such as trees and buildings that can cause turbulence and reduce the efficiency of your turbine.

Secondly, in order to obtain planning permission your turbine will need to be located away from neighbouring properties. As a guide the 6kW turbine will need to be 50m away from a neighbouring property and the 15kW turbine 150m away. Distances will vary from site-to-site so check with your local planning department.
